Last month, Meta announced plans to cut 5% of its workforce, labeling affected employees as “low performers.” However, the company is simultaneously expanding in select regions, including India’s tech hub, Bengaluru.

New Hiring Push in Bengaluru

According to multiple LinkedIn posts by Meta employees, the company is setting up a new site in Bengaluru and actively hiring for 41 positions. These roles, listed on Meta’s careers webpage, are primarily for software engineers, machine learning specialists, and chip designers for Meta’s data centers.

Engineering Director Role and Strategic Vision

Meta is also searching for an experienced Engineering Director to lead the new team. This leadership role will involve recruiting engineers, building a strong foundation for Meta’s operations in India, and shaping the long-term vision for engineering teams in the country.

Shift in Meta’s Engineering Strategy

While Meta has offices in Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai, these locations mainly house non-engineering roles. Historically, Meta has based its engineering teams in North America and Europe. The Bengaluru expansion signals a potential shift in this strategy.

Meta’s Long-Term Investment in India

A Meta spokesperson in India stated that the company is hiring a “small number of engineering positions” in Bengaluru as part of its long-term investment strategy. Though these 41 positions represent a small fraction of Meta’s 1,700 global job postings, they indicate the company’s growing interest in India as an engineering hub.
