In a major step toward implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a plan to conduct Class 10 board exams twice in an academic year. Starting from 2026, students will appear for their first board exam in February, with an optional second attempt in May.

First Attempt Mandatory, Second Optional
According to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, all Class 10 students must sit for the first phase of exams in February. The second phase in May will be optional and is designed to offer students a chance to improve their performance in up to three subjects—science, mathematics, social science, and languages.
This flexible structure is aimed at reducing stress and helping students put their best foot forward without the fear of a single high-stakes exam determining their academic future.
Winter-Bound Schools and Internal Assessments
Students studying in winter-bound schools will be given the choice to appear in either of the two phases, offering greater convenience due to regional academic calendars. However, internal assessments for Class 10 will continue to be conducted only once during the academic year.
Feedback and Stakeholder Involvement
The draft norms for this reform were made public in February and underwent a stakeholder feedback process before final approval. This collaborative approach ensures that the policy is practical, inclusive, and tailored to meet students’ needs.
NEP 2020: Encouraging Holistic Education
This decision stems from NEP 2020’s vision to overhaul the traditional examination system. The policy emphasizes eliminating the pressure of single-exam performance and reducing dependence on private coaching. NEP envisions a more holistic education system where students can explore their interests and attempt board exams multiple times if needed.
A New Era for Indian Schooling
With this reform, India is moving toward a more flexible and student-friendly assessment framework. By de-stressing the exam process and encouraging performance improvement, CBSE and NEP 2020 are reshaping the future of education in the country.
