The growth in sales primarily occurred in May and June, accounting for a combined 32 percent year-on-year increase, as supply constraints eased during this period.

BMW India Reported Best Ever Sales in First Half of 2023

The top three bestselling models for BMW were the X1, 3 Series, and X7, demonstrating their popularity among customers. The iX, an electric vehicle, emerged as the bestselling EV in the brand’s lineup.

BMW India attributed the success of the new X1, which contributed more than 20 percent of total sales, to its high demand and strong booking numbers since its launch earlier this year. The 3 Series Gran Limousine also performed well, accounting for close to 20 percent of total sales.

Contrary to market trends, BMW experienced equal demand for both sedans and SUVs, with a balanced growth in both segments. Vikram Pawah, President and CEO of BMW Group India, emphasized the brand’s commitment to maintaining a balance between sedans and SUVs.

BMW 7 Series Witnessed Impressive YoY Growth

The luxury vehicle segment, including the 7 Series, i7, X7, and XM, witnessed an impressive year-on-year growth of 128 percent. These top-end vehicles now contribute 20 percent of BMW India’s total sales. The all-electric i7 received an overwhelming response from customers, leading to an average waiting period of four months for these high-end models.

In the Mini lineup, the locally produced Countryman emerged as the bestselling model, accounting for over 60 percent of overall sales. The 3-door Mini hatchback and the all-electric Cooper SE also contributed significantly to Mini’s sales.

BMW achieved a 50 percent market share in the luxury electric vehicle segment, despite entering the premium EV space relatively late compared to other luxury carmakers. The iX, in particular, surpassed all other luxury EVs in sales during the first six months of the year.

Factors driving BMW’s growth in the luxury segment include the robust Indian economy, improved road infrastructure, and positive customer response to new launches. Pawah emphasized that India’s economy remains resilient and strong, providing a favorable environment for luxury vehicle sales.
