The Eastern Connectivity Tunnel will help Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by cutting down on travel times for travelers from the eastern parts of the city.

Bengaluru Airport To Be Linked With Whitefield Via Rs 16000 Crore Eastern Connectivity Tunnel

Travel times will be reduced by up to thirty minutes thanks to the tunnel, which will connect Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Mahadevapura directly to the airport.

Bengaluru Airport To Get Eastern Connectivity Tunnel  Worth ₹16,500 crore

This project is part of Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) ₹16,500 crore expansion plan to accommodate Bengaluru’s growing aviation needs.

By avoiding the extremely crowded Hebbal overpass, the tunnel will reroute about 30% of traffic headed for the airport and reduce traffic around the city.

In order to provide travelers going from the eastern state highway with a vital alternate route, construction is scheduled to start this year and be finished in three years.

Travelers’ commutes will be improved and traffic jams will be lessened thanks to the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel.

Hari Marar, CEO of BIAL, emphasized how the tunnel will enhance traffic flow and provide a quicker, more dependable approach to the airport.

BIAL Working on Additional Tunnel

To meet growing passenger expectations, BIAL is also working on additional projects in addition to the tunnel, such as the development of Terminal 3, the installation of two new metro stations, and modifications to the taxiway.

By 2030–32, Kempegowda International Airport is expected to handle up to 85 million passengers annually, exceeding previous projections.

D.K. Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, reiterated the state’s resolve to tackle Bengaluru’s traffic problems by implementing more extensive infrastructure initiatives.

Shivakumar declared that the first half of 2025 will see the start of a major underground tunnel project that would alleviate traffic congestion around the city.

Bengaluru still has traffic congestion despite metro operations, and the underground tunnel project is anticipated to be a game-changer.

A key component of KIA’s growth, the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel enhances efficiency and accessibility while assisting larger initiatives to address Bengaluru’s infamous traffic problems.

These programs represent a major step in addressing the demands of Bengaluru’s expanding economy and population.
