The flag carrier of the country, Air India became the first airline in Asia which will be offering the AirTag integration tracking feature to passengers.

Air India Integrating Apple AirTag Support For The Passengers

This would bring a big change as the lost bags will soon be less of a worry for passengers flying with Air India.

As we know, the Tata Group-owned Airline claimed to have integrated Apple AirTag with its baggage-tracking system and mobile app on Friday, April 5.

This would definitely help the customers to track the location of their luggage on their iPhones or any other Apple device.

Air India claimed that it is the first airline in Asia to offer the AirTag integration tracking feature to passengers.

Please note here that the AirTag integration builds upon the baggage tracking feature offered within the Air India app and website.

As part of this initiative, the passengers who have added their flight to the “My Trips” section of the app can track the information about their bags after it is checked in.

This tracking option is available under the “Track my Bags” tab on the Air India website.

Besides this, the passengers can also track their luggage by scanning the barcode on their checked-in baggage receipts, as per the information provided by the company.

The Chief Digital & Technology Officer, Air India, Dr Satya Ramaswamy said, “As we transform into a world-class global airline, we are excited to offer our guests an innovative option to help locate their baggage in case it does not arrive at the destination on schedule,” in a statement.

How Does It Work?

Consider a case where you have landed at your destination via an Air India flight, but your checked-in bags have not arrived on the luggage belt yet.

In such situations, you need to follow these simple steps which was stipulated by Air India.

  1. First of all, you need to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) for the baggage at Air India’s Baggage Counter at the airport.
  2. Next you need to generate the ‘Share Item Location’ in the ‘Find My’ app on your Apple device.
  3. Now, you need to share the location link with Air India on the mobile app by clicking on Baggage > Lost and Found Check-in Baggage. Paste the AirTag link here.
  4. Go to the Air India’s Customer Support Portal page wherein click on the Lost and Found Check-in Baggage > Share Item Location and provide the AirTag link along with your PIR number.

Once this is done, “the guests will receive an acknowledgment email from Air India with a link to check baggage status,” according to Air India.

It appears that the AirTag link is shared with Air India further helping its staffers locate the lost bags (if it is within airport premises) and reunite the luggage with the passenger.

Moving ahead, the airline said, “For ensuring privacy and security, location sharing will automatically end as soon as a guest is reunited with their bag, or automatically expire after seven days. It can also be stopped by the guest at any time.”

Please note here that this shared Item location feature is only available for the Apple devices which are running on iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later.
