In the latest ploy of sophisticated scams, scammers are now using AI to fabricate a voice of an officer who smooth talks a parent into convincing that their child is in legal trouble.
A Mother’s Harrowing Ordeal with AI driven Fraud
In a recent series of events, a woman named Kaveri shared her similar experience which was quite harrowing. She recalled the distress of receiving an urgent call from someone who claimed to be a police officer, straining belief, that the daughter of the woman has been arrested and shall only be released with immediate financial assistance.
The scammers utilized AI-generated speech to spin a tale of sham charges and the woman expressed her shock at the fake officer’s claims. She also shared how she recalled she heard a recording wherein she heard a recording of her daughter pleading for help, though the voice didn’t quite match her daughter’s.
Mother Understands the Deception
Slowly understanding the subterfuge, she asked the officer to allow her to speak to her daughter. This made the scammer more aggressive. However, she insisted on speaking to her daughter which later led to the scammer abruptly ending the call.
Once Kaveri took her story to social media, it went viral, since many other who had similar experiences came forward and shared the same. Plethora of virtual discussions were done which ranged from using measures like family-specific passwords to being concerned about the scammers’ knowledge. This included the insider know how and whereabouts of family members.
This incident furthers the risk of technology at the disposal of malicious people. It also illustrates how important it is to stay of vigilant as well as aware in the face of evolving technological threats.
