After successfully producing iPhones in India, Apple is now moving forward with plans to locally manufacture parts for its AirPods. A new report reveals that Apple supplier Jabil will open a second facility in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, to assemble the plastic enclosures used in AirPods before they are shipped to China and Vietnam for final assembly.
Jabil Expands India Presence With New Tamil Nadu Facility
Jabil, a Florida-based contract manufacturer, already operates a factory in Pune where it produces AirPods components. With the addition of the Tiruchirappalli plant, Apple will double its local assembly capabilities. The plant is expected to become operational soon, with formal announcements likely by July.
Diversifying Away From China Amid Soaring Tariffs
This development follows Apple’s recent efforts to diversify its production away from China, driven by rising US tariffs. CEO Tim Cook said the ongoing trade pressures could cost Apple an extra 900 million dollars. To reduce the impact, Apple is shifting more iPhone production to India, with AirPods and other devices split between India and Vietnam.
India To Lead iPhone Production, Vietnam For Accessories
Apple’s new strategy places India as the hub for iPhone manufacturing for the US market, while Vietnam will handle iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and a share of AirPods production. For non-US markets, China remains Apple’s main production base. Cook also stated that most iPhones sold in the US this June quarter will originate from India.
India’s Growing Role In Apple’s Global Plans
Apple recently began assembling AirPods in Hyderabad through Foxconn. With Jabil’s second plant in the pipeline, India’s position as a manufacturing powerhouse in Apple’s ecosystem is becoming stronger.
