Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-owned telecom operator, has significantly advanced its nationwide 4G expansion by making 96,103 of its 97,906 installed 4G sites operational across India. These sites are powered entirely by indigenous technology developed by a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services, which includes Tejas Networks and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).

96,103 4G Sites Of BSNL Are Now Active Across India

This milestone is part of BSNL’s larger plan to deploy one lakh 4G sites nationwide, marking a major step in strengthening domestic telecom infrastructure and reducing dependence on foreign vendors. The operator is also planning additional sites beyond the initial one lakh, for which it will require cabinet-level approval. With the successful rollout of indigenous 4G technology, TCS is optimistic about securing more business from BSNL, especially as the telco prepares for further 4G expansion and future 5G deployment to remain competitive in a fast-evolving telecom market.

Government Boost Strengthens BSNL’s Connectivity and Revival Efforts

Providing additional clarity on BSNL’s progress, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, informed the Lok Sabha that the initiative aims to enhance telecom services and expand high-speed connectivity across the country. He also highlighted the central government’s extensive support to BSNL through three major revival packages worth approximately ₹3.22 lakh crore.

As part of these measures, BSNL has been administratively assigned spectrum in multiple bands, including 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, and 3300 MHz, with airwaves allocated at discovered prices. According to the minister, these revival efforts have already begun yielding positive results, as BSNL has been consistently reporting operating profits since FY21. With indigenous technology, government backing, and nationwide expansion underway, BSNL is positioning itself for stronger market presence and long-term sustainability.

Summary:

BSNL has activated over 96,000 indigenous 4G sites nationwide, advancing its one lakh–site rollout. Supported by TCS-led technology and major government revival packages worth ₹3.22 lakh crore, BSNL has gained spectrum across multiple bands and returned to operating profits since FY21, strengthening its competitiveness and preparing for future 5G expansion.
