In a major move to ensure transparency and accountability, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued notices to 54 private universities across India for failing to share crucial institutional details as mandated under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956. These institutions did not upload the required information on their official websites or submit verified documents in the prescribed format despite repeated reminders.

Mandate for Disclosure Ignored
In June 2024, the UGC directed all universities to make important institutional data publicly accessible on their websites. This included administrative information, accreditation details, and academic programs, aimed at maintaining transparency and aiding student decision-making. Universities were also required to submit verified copies of the data to the Commission for inspection.
However, several universities ignored these directives, prompting the UGC to officially categorize them as defaulters. The commission emphasized that such non-compliance affects public trust and violates governance norms expected of higher education institutions.
Madhya Pradesh Leads With 10 Defaulters
According to reports, Madhya Pradesh topped the list with 10 universities, including Azim Premji University (Bhopal), Mansarovar Global University (Sehore), and Mahakaushal University (Jabalpur). Other states with multiple defaulters include Gujarat (9), Sikkim (5), Uttar Pradesh (4), and Jharkhand (4).
Prominent names such as Amity University (Patna, Ranchi, Mohali) and Dr D Y Patil Dnyan Prasad University (Pune) also featured on the list.
UGC Reiterates Need for Accountability
The UGC’s move is part of a broader effort to monitor and standardize the functioning of private universities in India. It reiterated that every recognized institution must maintain transparency to protect students’ interests. The Commission has warned that continued non-compliance could lead to stricter actions, including withdrawal of recognition or financial penalties.
The Road Ahead
This action serves as a wake-up call for private universities to align with regulatory norms. With the UGC tightening its oversight mechanisms, adherence to disclosure and data-sharing norms will be critical to maintaining credibility and ensuring student trust in India’s expanding higher education landscape.
