100% Pure Fruit Juice Claims Banned For Packaged Beverages

In this story, we are going to throw some light of fruit juices and their claims of being 100% pure fruit juice.

A Ban on Misleading Claims of 100% Fruit Juice

Contrary to their claim of being 100% pure, it has been known that the same has sugar percentage is on the higher side.

However, moving forward the food safety regulatory body Food Safety and Standards Association of India (FSSAI) has asked the manufacturers of the same to refrain for claiming themselves to sell 100% Fruit Juice on canned products.

Same has to be avoided while advertising or marketing this product. Concerning the same, FSSAI has asked all Food Business Operators (FBO) to take immediate action in this regard.

FSSAI, in its official statement, said that “Directive mandating all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to remove any claim of ‘100% fruit juices’ from the labels and advertisements of reconstituted fruit juices with an immediate effect.”

As per sources, FSSAI had received information that many companies are constantly making such misleading claims which is harmful to the health of customers. 

As a result, all the FBOs have been instructed to eliminate the already printed packaging material before September 1, 2024. As per the Food Safety and Standards (advertising and claims) Regulation- 2018, no company henceforth can claim 100 per cent fruit juice. 

FSSAI to Ensure Transparency in Fruit Juice Labelling

There is a lot of water content in such juices with a small amount of fruit juice or pulp. Hence, to prevent such misleading claims, this practise should be completely banned.

In addition to this, all FBOs have been asked to work within the rules of Food Safety and Standards Regulation.

The companies have also been directed to mention the word ‘reconstituted’ against the name of the juice that is reconstituted from the concentrate. 

For those juice packets which have more than 15 grams of sugar per kg, should be labelled as a sweet juice.

In an attempt to safeguard the customers by making misleading claims, FSSAI is constantly tries to strongly implement the rules of food safety. All companies will have to follow the rules made regarding fruit juice.
