What is an e-passport?
It looks like a regular passport but it’s different in that it is fitted with a small electronic chip, similar to the one on a driving license.
The microchip stores all the information printed on your passport including name, date of birth, address and other details.
TCS-Govt project
TCS is set to roll out chip-based e-passports by the end of the year.
This is part of the second phase of the passport project that the company bagged from the government.
Utility
These digital passports will facilitate easier international travel, provide protection against identity theft, and enhance data security.
The microchip will help immigration authorities quickly verify details of a traveler.
Objective
e-Passports will also help to reduce the circulation of fake passports.
The government aims to enhance the security of passports, eliminate duplication and data tampering.
The electronic chip will help improve the level of identity verification.
What about existing passports?
They will remain valid.
Passports currently in circulation will undergo the process of getting renewed with a new chip as and when they are up for renewal.
Police verification
To further smoothen the passport delivery ecosystem, the Ministry is working with States/UTs police to reduce the time taken for police verification.
DigiLocker integration
The Passport Seva System has also been integrated with the DigiLocker system to facilitate a paperless documentation process.
