Big News For Gmail Users: You Can Use Google Chat, Rooms On Gmail Mobile (How It Works?)

Last year, rolled out Google Meet, Chat, and Rooms tabs in Gmail for G Suite (now Google Workspace) were rolled out by Google in the month of August.

The addition of these tabs has made it easier for users to stay in touch with their colleagues and collaborate on tasks.

The integration of these is now extended to personal accounts and all the users have been granted the access to the new chat and rooms tabs.

The New Chat Integration

The new Chat integration which can be enabled on the phone by following a couple of simple steps has been spotted by Twitter user Pratik.

One can find a new “Chat” option in the app settings that enables the Chat and Rooms tabs. In order to enable it, one has to tap on the checkbox next to it and then tap on “Try it” in the following pop-up.

When one navigates back to the Gmail home screen (screenshots attached below), a new pop-up can be highlighting the changes can be seen after enabling the feature. Three pages talking about the new Gmail interface that will let you access your emails, chats, and video calls by tapping on the tabs at the bottom are included in this pop up.

Through the first app you can see all your emails, the second one lets you see your Chats while the third one allows you to access the rooms.

In order to prevent being doubly notified for each message, a pop-up that will give you the option to turn off duplicate chat notifications can be seen.

Currently In Early Access

Also, one has to keep in that since the new Chat integration in Gmail is currently in early access, once turned on, one may experience bugs or other issues. However, there’s an option to disable it and it is by tapping on the checkbox next to the Chat option in the app settings and it shall revert it to the old Gmail interface.

In the version 2021.03.07.364486182 of the Gmail app on Android, the new chat integration is live. In case of not being able to find the new option in the app settings, one may update to the latest release by following the Play Store link below. The meet tab, notably, been available for both personal and enterprise Google accounts for quite a while now. This new integration comes after Google Chat started fully replacing Hangouts for personal users.
