Microsoft Will Kill Passwords For Laptops, Mobiles By 2021

Leading technology giant Microsoft is planning to reveal a game changing development in unlocking laptops and smartphones. 

This means that we will no longer be required to put in any passwords in order to unlock our phones. Microsoft plans to bring this change by 2021.

Microsoft To Do Away With Password System; Cites Increase In Cyber Breaches

The company has put up a blog post, where the company talks about doing away with the password system for good. The company states that due to the increasing number of cyber breaches. 

The company cites the Gartner Group, which states that 20 to 50 percent of all help desk calls are for resetting passwords and 250 corporate accounts are hacked every day.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that cybercrime results in costing the economy for $2.9 million per minute. Of these, 80 per cent of these attacks are directed at passwords. 

In November 2019, at Microsoft Ignite, Microsoft also stated that more than 100 million people were already using the sign-in method of Microsoft that does not require passwords.

Passwordless Access A Reality By 2021?

The blog post states, “In May of 2020, just in time for World Password Day, that number had already grown to more than 150 million people, and the use of biometrics to access work accounts is now almost double what it was then. We’ve drawn strength from our customers’ determination this year and are set to make passwordless access a reality for all our customers in 2021.”

As per Microsoft, a huge number of users are using Windows Hello for Windows 10 devices to sign in, instead of using passwords. Windows Hello is a technology that implements biometric visualization through which, users will be enabled to secure access to their  devices, applications, online services and networks through fingerprints, iris scans and face recognition.
