By September 30, the tagging of the ‘Country of Origin’ on all items being sold on the e-commerce platforms has been made compulsory.

Amidst the India-China border tensions, such norms have gained momentum.

Flipkart and Amazon Under Govt’s Scrutiny?

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs in the notices sent to both companies said that on examining the concerned advertisements, it was found that the mandatory declarations were not mentioned as per the norms under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules.

Both companies were asked by the ministry to provide the required information.

Also, if the companies didn’t respond to the notice within 15 days, action will be initiated against them, stated the ministry.

The government’s decision has been appreciated by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which has been heading this campaign to make the disclosure of ‘Country of Origin’ mandatory. CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal called the decision a bold move.

Khandelwal alleged that no product follows the obligation of stating the ‘Country of Origin” and further asked the Centre to look into the festive sales of both Amazon and Flipkart immediately.
