Tesla Gigafactory In Karnataka! Govt Rolls Out Red Carpet For Elon Musk; Talks Are On

Tesla to establish its 1st Indian gigafactory R&D unit in Bengaluru; Karnataka government in talks with Tesla.

With Apple establishing its 1st office in India, the American electric vehicle and clean energy company Tesla is now in talks with the Karnataka government to establish its 1st Indian ‘Gigafactory’ in Bengaluru.

With major electric vehicle makers present in the alleged Indian city, it is quite practical for Tesla to start its Indian unit in Bengaluru.

Let’s learn more on this.

Tesla to Establish 1st Indian R&D Centre in Bengaluru

Elon Musk’s Tesla’s 1st Indian research and development (R&D) unit, called Tesla’s Indian Gigafactory has been approached by the Karnataka government to use Bengaluru as the site for the research and innovation unit.

While the preliminary discussions have already been conducted, Tesla hasn’t responded on the matter yet.

According to Gaurav Gupta, principal secretary of Karnataka’s commerce and industries department,

“We have offered Tesla all support to set up a research and development (R&D) centre and the manufacturing unit.

Bengaluru has a favourable ecosystem for electric vehicles (EVs) and Tesla can leverage on that.”

Why is Bengaluru a Favourable Choice?

In his discussion with the Economic Times, Gupta added that the Karnataka government has briefed the EV giant of all the advantages of opening their unit in Bengaluru.

It is promising because all the electric vehicle (EV) companies (including startups) in India, like Bosch, Daimler, Ather Energy, Mahindra Electric and Ola Mobility have their units in the city.

This implies all the component makers of the same can easily be available in this environment, ensuring guaranteed infrastructure.

When Is Tesla’s Launch in India Expected?

On October 2, an unofficial Indian fan club of Tesla Inc., by the user handle ‘Tesla Club India™’ tweeted, asking Elon Musk about Tesla’s entry in India, to which Musk responded by replying,

‘Next year for sure’.
