Xiaomi And Oppo Import Smartphones Into India

Xiaomi and Oppo have had to import their smartphone models into India to keep up with the demand that piled up during the lockdown that was imposed throughout the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Sources close to the development have revealed that this is a temporary move. He said, “This is purely to take care of the demand that is there and the fact that they (Xiaomi) are not able to produce to meet demand.”

This is a highly expensive move as an import of smartphone devices and components into India will result in high tariffs. Most of the smartphone manufacturers have set up shop here in India and manufacture their parts and products here as a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India movement.

Laborers Resigning And Not Showing Up For Work

The manufacturing plants of many companies was halted completely due to the lockdown that was imposed in the country. As the lockdown is being lifted in India in a phased manner, the manufacturing plants are slowly and steadily resuming their operations. But they are now facing issues such as labor shortages as many of the laborers have returned to their homes.

This has resulted in these Chinese companies having to resort to import smartphones. There is no news about how many smartphones are being imported in India as the sources who revealed the information weren’t at liberty to discuss this matter.

Also, huge amounts of smartphones that are being sold by Xiaomi have been manufactured by contract Foxconn in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Whereas, Oppo is carrying out its assembly of their India-made phones at a plant on the outskirts of New Delhi.

Laborers at the manufacturing companies have resigned or not shown up for work as the Coronavirus pandemic has shown no signs of stopping or slowing down either.
