India’s 2nd largest telecom operator: Airtel has shocked and stunned its loyal users, by announcing a massive hike in minimum recharge.
Now, Rs 45 is the minimum recharge that a user has to do, in order to keep his number active.

Airtel Hike Minimum Recharge By 96%
Effective December 29th, the minimum recharge for any Airtel prepaid number is Rs 45, which is an increase of 95.6%, compared to earlier minimum recharge, which was Rs 23.
This increase from Rs 23 to Rs 45 for keeping the number active with the ability to receive incoming calls will impact several million customers, all over the nation.
What Will You Get For Rs 45 Now?
Instead of getting a validity of 28 days, Airtel customers won’t get anything from the recharge of Rs 45.
In case you make a call, then the base charge of Rs 2.5/second will be charged, for both STD and local call. At the same time, under the base recharge, local SMS will be charged Re 1 and STD SMS will be Rs 1.5.
Besides, video calls will be charged at 5Paisa per minute, as per the base tariff.
Zero data and talk time will be available.
Airtel said, “With effect from 29th December 2019, the existing SUK base plan is being discontinued and new customers shall be on a base tariff plan of 2.5p/sec for all Local & STD voice calls, 5p/sec for National Video Calls, 50p/MB for Data, SMS tariff of Re 1/SMS for Local, Rs 1.5/SMS for National, and Rs 5/SMS for International. Further, it will be mandatory to recharge with a voucher of Rs 45 or above, every 28 days to avail services,”
What Is The Minimum Recharge For Talktime?
Rs 49 is currently the minimum recharge for getting a talktime. With this recharge of Rs 49, Airtel customers can get Rs 38.52 as talktime, and 100 MB of data for a validity of 28 days.
What Will Happen If You Don’t Recharge?
In case the minimum recharge is not done, then Airtel will provide a window of 15 days as grace period.
Now, it is upto Airtel’s discretion to provide you the services in this grace period: Based on your history, some services can be provided, and some wont: You cannot complain or claim any service.
After 15 days, if there has been no recharge done, then your Airtel account will be suspended.
Interestingly, despite this increase of 96% in Airtel’s minimum recharge, they are still providing the cheapest minimum recharge among all telcos.
For 28 days validity, Vodafone users need to pay Rs 48,and Jio users need to pay 98 for regular smartphone users, and Rs 75 for Jio Phone users.
