Nokia X – Will they Change Nokia’s fortunes?

Nokia bringing Android based phones is a major step, especially considering that Microsoft, who acquired Nokia have their own mobile OS, which they have been aggressively trying to push. However, the growth of Windows phones has been quite lackluster due to lack of good developer ecosystem, and absence of some of the popular apps.

Nokia was ubiquitous with mobile phones when the mobile revolution started. They were know for their well built mobile phones. People loved it. But, with arrival of smartphones, Samsung replaced them and many think it was because they did not adopt Android early.

However, with Nokia X coming in, market dynamics are sure to change. People still love Nokia phones, and with Android OS coming on top of it, I would not be surprised if people start shifting towards Nokia back again.

As far as the specifications go, it is still quite underwhelming, but given that they are lower to mid-range smartphones, it was expected.

Nokia is very later in adopting Android – Over next few days we get to see many hands-on reviews and customer reactions to these phones. That will let us know whether Nokia X will really make a dent in Smartphone market.

When will they arrive in India?

I think it will arrive in India immediately. India is a huge market, and these phones are specifically targeting developing markets like India. I would not be surprised if you start seeing their listing in next few days on major ecommerce sites.

How will they be priced

I did not come across their Indian prices, but in the UK they have been priced at €89, €99 and €109 respectively. In our view the prices should be in the range of

  • Nokia X – Rs. 9000 to Rs. 10000
  • Nokia X plus – Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 11000
  • Nokia XL – Rs. 13000 to Rs. 14000

We will update the prices as soon as we get the official figures.
