Indian Mobile phone Sales: 50 mln units, 90% are sub Rs. 5k range

Cyber Media Research yesterday released their Mobile Handsets Market Review giving insights on the mobile handset sales in India for the first quarter of 2012. The report finds that 90% of all the mobile handsets sold in India are priced at less than Rs. 5000 range.

Out of all the mobile handsets sold in first quarter, more than two thirds were multi-sim phones, showing growing preference of Indians towards owning more than one number.

Highlights of CMR report on Indian Mobile Handset Market

– Total of 50.2 million mobile handsets were sold between Jan-March 2012, registering a growth of 8.7% compared to corresponding quarter in the previous year.

– Out of 50.2 Mln handset sold, 47.5 mln were feature phones, while 2.7 million accounted for smartphones.

– Although Smartphones make up only 5.3% of units sold and they accounted for almost quarter of total handset revenues in first quarter

– In sub 5k category, Nokia leads the handset sales with 21.8% of all shipments followed by Samsung (10.7%) and Micromax (6.4%)

– Total India smartphone sales touched 2.7 million units during January-March 2012. Samsung led the smartphone sales chart with 40.4% share followed by Nokia (25.5%)  and Blackberry (12.3%).

– Samsung launched seven new smartphone models in India, further tightening its grip on sales in different price bands between INR 7,500 to INR 27,000.

In terms of Overall mobile handset market share, Nokia still leads with 23% market share followed by Samsung (14.1%) at second position and Micromax (5.8%) at third position, in terms of sales (unit shipments) during January-March 2012.
