Indian Railways has introduced stricter ticket cancellation rules, making last-minute cancellations more expensive for passengers. The new policy is aimed at reducing misuse of bookings and improving seat availability.

No Refund If Cancelled Within 8 Hours
Under the revised rules, no refund will be given if a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train’s departure.
This is a major shift compared to earlier rules, where partial refunds were possible even closer to departure time.
50% Refund Between 8–24 Hours
If a ticket is cancelled between 8 and 24 hours before departure, passengers will receive only 50% of the ticket fare as a refund.
This introduces a stricter penalty window, discouraging last-minute changes.
Why Railways Changed the Rules
The new policy has been introduced to:
- Reduce last-minute cancellations
- Prevent ticket hoarding and misuse
- Improve seat utilization and availability
Railways believe stricter penalties will ensure that only serious bookings are made, reducing empty seats due to late cancellations.
How This Differs From Earlier Rules
Previously, Indian Railways allowed:
- 25% deduction if cancelled 48–12 hours before departure
- 50% deduction if cancelled 12–4 hours before departure
- No refund only after a very narrow window close to departure
Now, the “no refund” window has expanded significantly to 8 hours, making the policy much stricter.
Who Will Be Most Affected
These changes will primarily impact:
- Business travelers with uncertain schedules
- Last-minute plan changers
- Tatkal and high-demand ticket users
Passengers will now need to plan cancellations much earlier to avoid losing the full ticket amount.
Bigger Picture: Push for Efficiency
This move is part of a broader effort by Indian Railways to:
- Optimize seat occupancy
- Reduce operational losses
- Improve passenger management
