Chinese AI startup StepFun has unveiled the StepX Neo, claiming it to be the world’s first mass-market agentic AI smartphone. Unlike conventional smartphones that simply add AI-powered features, the StepX Neo has been designed around an AI-first operating system capable of understanding user intent and completing complex, multi-step tasks with minimal intervention. The launch signals a new phase in the evolution of AI-powered mobile devices.

What Makes It An ‘Agentic’ AI Phone?

Unlike traditional virtual assistants that respond to one command at a time, the StepX Neo is built to execute entire workflows. Users can ask the phone to plan trips, book rides, make payments, organise schedules, edit documents, or manage files through a single conversational request.

The AI coordinates across multiple apps and services automatically, reducing the need to switch between different applications.

Powered By Step AOS

The smartphone runs on Step AOS, a custom operating system built specifically for AI-native experiences. Instead of treating AI as an add-on feature, the operating system places artificial intelligence at the centre of the user experience.

The phone also includes a built-in AI assistant called Step Amoo, which understands natural language and performs everyday tasks using voice or text commands.

AI Works Even Without The Internet

One of the biggest highlights of the StepX Neo is its ability to perform many AI-powered functions directly on the device without requiring constant internet connectivity. On-device AI processing enables faster responses, improves privacy, and reduces dependence on cloud servers for routine tasks.

This makes the phone useful even in areas with weak or no network coverage.

Ecosystem Integration

StepFun has partnered with several major Chinese digital platforms to allow the AI assistant to complete real-world tasks seamlessly. The integrations enable users to book transport, make digital payments, edit documents, create content, and access various online services through simple conversational commands.

The goal is to replace manual app navigation with AI-driven automation.

Global Launch Still Uncertain

The StepX Neo has currently been announced only for the Chinese market, and the company has not disclosed pricing or international availability. However, the launch highlights China’s growing ambition in AI hardware and could intensify global competition in the emerging AI-first smartphone market.

Summary

StepFun has introduced the StepX Neo, claiming it to be the world’s first mass-market agentic AI smartphone. Powered by the custom Step AOS operating system and the Step Amoo AI assistant, the device can perform complex tasks across multiple apps, supports on-device AI processing, and aims to transform smartphones from app-centric devices into intelligent digital assistants.
