In the battle of feeds and likes, the quiet rise of a new contender often speaks louder than the noise of the giants.

Threads Pulls Ahead on Mobile

After nearly three years since its launch, Meta’s Threads is reportedly attracting more daily mobile users than rival platform X. According to Similarweb data shared by TechCrunch, Threads reached 141.5 million daily active iOS and Android users globally as of January 7th. This surpasses Elon Musk’s platform, X, which had 125 million daily mobile users at the same time.

Similarweb notes that Threads overtook X sometime between late October and early November, after a steady period of growth. This milestone suggests the surge was organic and not triggered by recent Grok-related controversies. While X still leads in the United States, Threads is steadily closing the gap. The report also highlights that X now has half as many daily active mobile users in the US compared to last year, signaling a shift in user behavior.

Web Traffic Tells a Different Story

On the web, however, X maintains a strong lead. As of January 13th, it attracted 145.4 million daily web visitors, compared to just 8.5 million on Threads. Meta may have won the mobile battle, according to these new estimates, but with a combined total of around 150 million daily users, Threads still faces a significant challenge to match X’s overall more than 270 million daily users. The contrast between mobile and web engagement illustrates that while Threads is gaining momentum, the larger digital ecosystem still heavily favors X.

The tides of the digital world shift slowly, and today’s underdog may yet carve tomorrow’s currents.

Summary

Meta’s Threads now reportedly surpasses X in daily mobile users, with 141.5 million versus 125 million globally. Similarweb data shows Threads overtook X between October and November after steady growth. X still dominates web traffic with 145.4 million daily visitors. While Threads leads on mobile, its combined total of 150 million users remains far below X’s 270 million.
