Meta’s WhatsApp is implementing a new update on its Android platform, preventing users from taking screenshots of other users’ profile pictures. The feature, rolling out globally including in India, blocks full-profile picture screenshots without displaying any error messages.
Screenshot Restrictions Explained
Attempting to capture a full-profile picture now results in a blacked-out image, with no warning message from WhatsApp. However, users can still screenshot profile pictures in the profile view mode, depicted in a small circular pop-out window.
iOS Devices Remain Unaffected
As of now, this change is exclusive to Android devices, leaving iOS users unaffected. WhatsApp for iOS still permits full-screen profile picture screenshots, indicating a platform-specific rollout of the update.
Enhanced Privacy Measures
This feature complements existing privacy options allowing users to control who can view their profile pictures. Within Privacy settings, users can restrict profile picture visibility to specific contacts only.
Recent WhatsApp Updates
Last month, WhatsApp introduced a new chat search feature allowing users to filter conversations by date. Available on Android, iOS, and desktop versions, this feature enables users to retrieve chats, media, and links shared on specific dates, enhancing user experience across platforms.
