Volkswagen is preparing to enter India’s highly competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment with an all-new compact SUV scheduled to launch in 2027. The upcoming model will become the brand’s most accessible SUV in India and is expected to compete with popular models such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO.

The launch will mark Volkswagen’s return to the sub-four-metre passenger vehicle segment following the discontinuation of the Polo hatchback in 2022.
New Volkswagen SUV to Be Based on Skoda Kylaq
Volkswagen has confirmed that the upcoming SUV will be developed specifically for India and manufactured locally using the MQB-A0-IN platform. The same India-focused architecture underpins the Skoda Kylaq, giving Volkswagen access to an established engineering and manufacturing base.
The new SUV is expected to share several mechanical components with the Kylaq, while receiving distinctive styling to establish its own identity.
The model’s official name has not yet been announced. Volkswagen could draw inspiration from its Tera compact SUV sold in international markets, although the final Indian design and its relationship with the global model remain unconfirmed.
Expected Design and Features
The upcoming SUV is likely to feature a sportier exterior than the Skoda Kylaq, with Volkswagen-specific headlamps, grille, bumpers, tail lamps and alloy wheels.
The cabin is also expected to receive a distinct dashboard design and interior detailing. A sportier GT Line variant could be offered, potentially featuring darker exterior elements and contrasting interior finishes.
However, Volkswagen has not officially revealed the production model’s design, equipment list or variant structure. Details about features such as a sunroof, digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system and connected-car technology remain expectations rather than confirmed specifications.
Expected Engine and Transmission Options
The new compact SUV is expected to use the familiar 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine currently offered in the Skoda Kylaq.
The Kylaq’s engine produces approximately 115 hp and 178 Nm of torque. Volkswagen could pair the engine with manual and automatic transmission options, although the final specifications have not been confirmed.
The new model is also expected to use front-wheel drive. Its final power output, fuel efficiency and transmission choices will be disclosed closer to launch.
Volkswagen Targets India’s High-Volume SUV Market
The sub-four-metre SUV segment is one of India’s most competitive passenger vehicle categories, attracting buyers looking for compact dimensions, practical interiors and SUV styling.
A locally manufactured model could help Volkswagen reach customers who find the larger Taigun relatively expensive or want a smaller vehicle for urban driving. It could also strengthen production volumes and improve economies of scale for the Volkswagen Group’s Indian operations.
Pricing has not been announced, but the SUV is expected to sit below the Taigun in Volkswagen’s lineup. Its success will depend on its final price, equipment, safety package and how convincingly it differentiates itself from the Skoda Kylaq.
Summary: Volkswagen will launch a new sub-four-metre compact SUV in India in 2027, returning to the segment after the Polo’s discontinuation. Based on the locally developed MQB-A0-IN platform shared with the Skoda Kylaq, the SUV is expected to feature a distinct design and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. It will target rivals including the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Venue.
