In a bold step to improve traffic safety and streamline road usage, Goa CM Pramod Sawant has announced a series of reforms targeting abandoned vehicles, illegal rentals, and public transport inefficiencies.

Abandoned Vehicles to be Scrapped
Vehicles parked in one spot for more than eight days on public roads will now be classified as abandoned and sent directly for scrapping.
“Notices will be sent. If no action is taken, the vehicle goes for scrap, and the owner cannot claim it,” Sawant warned.
In Panaji alone, over 250 abandoned vehicles have already been seized, with the crackdown expected to expand state-wide. The move comes amid increasing clutter on newly widened roads and growing complaints about blocked streets.
Crackdown on Illegal Rentals
The state is also targeting illegal vehicle rentals, especially those operating without licenses. So far, 550 private vehicles have been penalized for functioning as unauthorized rentals. Reports have been forwarded to the transport department for license cancellation.
With 365 accident deaths annually—many involving rental vehicles—Sawant called the issue “serious.” Notably, 70% of the victims are not at fault, and pedestrians account for 50% of the fatalities.
Boost to Public Transport
Goa, known for having India’s highest people-to-vehicle ratio, is now investing in public transportation upgrades. Planned steps include:
- Expansion of Mhaji Bus services
- Deployment of KTC buses on internal routes
- New bus routes to connect industrial zones, villages, and towns
- Access to remote locations via improved last-mile connectivity
Smart Traffic Solutions & Infrastructure Projects
To reduce congestion at key junctions, Sawant confirmed a proposal for an elevated overbridge at Verna. In addition, Goa will introduce smart traffic signals integrated with CCTV surveillance, enabling real-time detection and fining of traffic violations.
With stricter parking norms, smarter traffic management, and improved transport infrastructure, Goa aims to balance tourism, local mobility, and road safety under a more accountable traffic system.
