In a sudden policy reversal, the Railway Board has suspended the planned extension of the Vande Bharat Express — originally scheduled to commence on March 1, 2026 — between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. The premium train service was expected to strengthen connectivity between the twin capitals of Jammu & Kashmir, but authorities cited “unavoidable circumstances” for halting the plan.

What Changed: From Go to Hold

Earlier on Tuesday, Northern Railways had announced that the Vande Bharat Express, currently operating between Srinagar and SMVD Katra, would be extended up to Jammu Tawi. This extension was expected to improve direct rail connectivity with enhanced passenger capacity by upgrading from an eight-car to a 20-car rake.

However, just hours after this announcement, the Railway Board intervened and officially put the extension on hold until further notice. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal confirmed the decision late Tuesday night, expressing regret for any inconvenience and saying additional information will be released when available.

Strategic Importance of the Vande Bharat Route

The Vande Bharat Express service on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla line represents a milestone in rail connectivity for the Kashmir Valley. Since its launch on June 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the service has played a key role in linking the region to the wider Indian rail network, significantly reducing travel times and enhancing comfort for passengers.

Extending this service up to Jammu Tawi — a major rail junction — was seen as a major step forward in providing seamless high-speed train travel across Jammu and Kashmir. Such connectivity was expected to benefit tourists, pilgrims, and local residents alike by offering faster, more comfortable transport options.

What’s Next?

For now, the extension project remains in limbo. Railways officials have not specified what specific issues led to the hold — whether operational challenges, infrastructure readiness, or scheduling conflicts — only stating that the Notification Programme for the extension has been paused until further guidance.

Passengers and local stakeholders hoping for improved rail services will be watching closely for updates from Northern Railways or the Railway Board. Officials have promised to share further details as and when they’re available.
