The UK government has unveiled a new set of immigration reforms aimed at reducing net migration and strengthening compliance. One of the most significant changes is the reduction in the post-study work visa duration for international graduates—from two years to just 18 months.

Stricter English Language and Settlement Rules

The reforms also raise English language proficiency requirements for both primary applicants and their dependents. Additionally, the qualifying period to apply for settled status (permanent residency) will now be 10 years, up from the previous five-year requirement. The government says this move is part of a broader effort to support British workers and raise national skill levels.

Educational Institutions Face More Accountability

Educational institutions recruiting international students will now be held to tougher standards. New compliance requirements will be enforced to ensure that student recruitment aligns with immigration rules. These changes are designed to curb misuse of the student visa system while maintaining the integrity of the UK’s education sector.

Businesses Must Invest in Local Talent

In another major shift, companies hiring foreign workers will be required to invest in the development of domestic talent. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that visa access will be linked to efforts that upskill the UK workforce. “We’re creating a controlled, selective, and fair migration system,” Starmer stated.

“Common Sense” Approach to Immigration

Reaffirming the government’s new stance, Prime Minister Starmer shared, “If you want to live in the UK, you should speak English. That’s common sense.” He added that the reforms represent a “clean break with the past” and reflect a promise to take control of UK borders.

Aiming for Lower Migration and Higher Skills

These policy changes are part of a larger white paper initiative meant to bring down migration numbers while fostering a skilled local workforce. The government claims the reforms will create a fairer and more sustainable immigration framework that balances economic needs with national interests.

The reforms mark a shift in the UK’s immigration strategy, targeting long-term settlement, language proficiency, and institutional responsibility—all while aiming to reduce migration and elevate British workforce capabilities.
