UGC Offers Shortened Under-Graduate Courses: Get Degree In 2.5 Years!

Accelerated UG Programs: Key Highlights

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar, during a press conference in Chennai, announced that students in three-year UG programs could complete their degrees in just two and a half years, while those in four-year programs could graduate within three years. This proposal, drafted by a committee led by IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti, has already been approved by the UGC. The rollout is planned for the 2025-26 academic year.

Benefits of Shorter UG Programmes

  1. Reduced Time and Costs
Accelerated programs allow students to save both time and financial resources by completing their degrees sooner.
  2. Early Career Opportunities
Graduating early enables students to enter the workforce or pursue higher education without delays, boosting career prospects.
  3. Enhanced Flexibility
The initiative aligns with the NEP 2020, offering students diverse options to customize their learning paths according to individual goals.

Implementation Framework

The UGC is preparing comprehensive guidelines to ensure smooth implementation. These will cover:

  • Course Structure: Details on curriculum adjustments to accommodate the shortened duration.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Criteria for students opting for accelerated tracks to ensure they meet academic standards.

A Milestone in Education Reform

This proposal reflects the UGC’s commitment to making higher education adaptable and student-centric. By reducing the time required for UG programs, the UGC is setting a precedent for educational reforms that prioritize efficiency and global competitiveness.

Students, institutions, and policymakers are eagerly awaiting further details, which are expected to be released in the coming months.
