Mumbai, notorious for its traffic congestion, is set to witness a transformative infrastructure project. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of a 90-kilometre network of ring roads, with an estimated budget of ₹58,517 crore. This ambitious project, titled “Mumbai in Minutes,” is expected to significantly reduce travel time across the city and surrounding areas, making commuting faster and more efficient.

Travel Time Across Mumbai Will Reduce To 1 Hour: Rs 58,000 Crore Allocated For 90 Kms Of New Ring Roads

“Mumbai in Minutes” Project: Vision and Benefits

The “Mumbai in Minutes” project is designed to cut travel times across the city, aiming for no journey to take more than 59 minutes. The plan connects outer ring roads with inner ring roads, creating an integrated network of urban highways, sea routes, and roads through forests and creeks. This network will allow for easier commutes to the Gujarat border, Konkan Maharashtra, and Western Maharashtra.

With major infrastructure developments like the Navi Mumbai International Airport and Wadhwan Port expected to increase traffic, the new road network will help manage congestion. Most of these new roads will be tolled, and the project is a collaboration between MMRDA, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Major Infrastructure Investments in the Region

This ring road project is part of a larger infrastructure push in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with a total estimated cost of ₹3 lakh crore, which includes metro projects, new roads, bridges, flyovers, and slum development. The ambitious plans reflect the city’s commitment to modernizing its transportation and housing infrastructure over the next five years.

National Infrastructure Modernization: Nitin Gadkari’s Announcement

As part of a broader initiative to modernize India’s infrastructure, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently announced plans for a 14-lane highway linking Atal Setu with Bengaluru, Pune’s Ring Road, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This new route will reduce traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by up to 50%, significantly easing travel for residents of Bengaluru and surrounding regions.

Mumbai’s ring road network and other infrastructure initiatives signal a modernized, efficient future for both the city and India’s broader transportation landscape.
