TRAI asks Jio To Provide All Plans Across All Platforms, Devices

India’s telecom regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), has directed Reliance Jio to revise certain tariff practices, flagging them as “non-transparent” and “discriminatory.” The move comes after a detailed probe into how Jio was offering some of its prepaid plans to customers.

TRAI Scolds Jio Over Tariff Confusion & Misinformation

What Triggered the Investigation?

The issue dates back to 2025, when Jio discontinued some entry-level prepaid plans with 1GB/day data, stating that these were only available through its retail stores.

However, TRAI found inconsistencies in how these plans were being distributed. Certain recharge vouchers were not uniformly accessible across platforms, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in pricing.


Key Violations Flagged by TRAI

According to the regulator’s findings, Jio was offering some tariff plans in a restricted manner:

  • ₹249 and ₹199 plans were available only at Jio retail stores
  • ₹209 plan was accessible only via the MyJio app
  • Some plans were tied exclusively to JioPhone and JioBharat devices

TRAI stated that such practices violate the principle of non-discrimination, as all tariff offerings should be equally available to all users, regardless of device or platform.


Regulator’s Directives to Jio

TRAI has issued two clear instructions to the telecom giant:

  1. Publish all tariff plans across platforms
    Jio must ensure that every plan—whether prepaid or special vouchers—is available via its website, app, customer care, and retail outlets.
  2. Remove device-specific restrictions
    Plans currently limited to JioPhone or JioBharat users must be made accessible to all subscribers using other devices.

The company has been given time until April 14 to comply with these directions.

This development highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny in India’s telecom sector, especially as operators bundle services and diversify offerings.

Jio, the country’s largest telecom operator with over 500 million users, has played a major role in disrupting pricing since its launch.

However, as competition with players like Airtel intensifies, regulators are ensuring that pricing strategies remain fair, transparent, and accessible for all consumers.
