The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rolled out the OTP message traceability rule starting December 11, 2024. This regulation is designed to prevent fraudulent messages by enabling telecom operators to trace the sender of any commercial SMS. Messages from unverified sources will be blocked before reaching users, ensuring a safer communication ecosystem.

Tracing Commercial Messages Becomes Easy With Traceability Rule: How It Effects Users?

Why Is This Rule Significant?

India has witnessed a sharp increase in online scams, with incidents rising by 3,000 percent in recent years. Fraudulent messages often lead unsuspecting users to click on malicious links or share sensitive information. TRAI’s new system directly addresses this issue by blocking suspicious or unverified messages and making it easier to trace their origins.

How Does It Work?

  • Message Verification: Every commercial message now follows a verified path, ensuring its legitimacy.
  • Blocking Fraudulent Messages: Messages sent by scammers are filtered out at the network level.
  • Protection Against Unwanted Communication: The rule complements existing measures against unsolicited commercial messages and spam calls.

Impact on OTP Delivery

One concern about the new rule was the potential delay in receiving One-Time Passwords (OTPs) essential for transactions. TRAI clarified that these fears are unfounded. Reports suggest that 95 percent of messages are being delivered without any issues, with only minor disruptions expected initially.

Widespread Implementation

As of November, 27,000 businesses had registered with telecom operators to comply with the rule. Efforts continue to onboard remaining entities. Every day, around 1.5 to 1.7 billion commercial messages are sent in India. With this new system, legitimate companies can reach users seamlessly, while unregistered senders are blocked.

Enhanced User Safety and Reduced Spam

TRAI’s initiative marks a significant step in improving user safety. By filtering out fraudulent and unverified messages, the rule aims to provide mobile users with a spam-free experience. For businesses, compliance ensures their messages reach intended recipients without delays, boosting consumer trust in digital communication.

This regulation is a win-win for consumers and businesses, promising a safer and more reliable mobile communication environment.
