When the road tilts toward towering SUVs, the sedan readies a quiet, calculated comeback.
The Mid-Size Makeover Wave
Though SUVs and crossovers continue to dominate sales charts, the sedan segment is gearing up for renewed momentum in the months ahead. Carmakers such as Skoda, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Honda and Mercedes-Benz are preparing a mix of facelifts and all-new introductions, signalling fresh energy across price brackets.

Leading the charge is the Hyundai Verna, which is due for a mid-cycle refresh. The most significant changes are expected inside, with a modern curved twin-screen layout inspired by Hyundai’s latest global offerings. A redesigned steering wheel and upgraded cabin materials are also anticipated. Externally, spy images hint at a revised front fascia, with updates to the rear design likely.
In the premium electric space, the Mercedes-Benz CLA is set to debut in India within a couple of months. Expected to be priced around ₹62 lakh (ex-showroom), the India-spec version is likely to resemble the CLA 250+ sold internationally. It is expected to feature an 85 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed WLTP-certified range of up to 792 km on a single charge.
Familiar Names, Fresh Faces
The Volkswagen Virtus is also due for a mid-life update this year. Subtle exterior revisions and a more feature-rich interior are expected, mirroring upgrades planned for the upcoming Taigun facelift. Mechanically, it is likely to retain the existing 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines. Transmission options should continue with the dual-clutch automatic, while an 8-speed torque converter automatic may be introduced.
Sharing its platform, the Skoda Slavia is lined up for a 2026 refresh. Styling tweaks at both ends and a cabin inspired by the updated Kushaq are anticipated. Major mechanical changes are unlikely, though a new torque converter automatic gearbox could be added.
Finally, the Honda City is set for another round of updates in the latter half of 2026. Despite receiving a facelift in 2023, it is expected to gain exterior refinements, refreshed upholstery, revised trim details and select feature additions.
In a market crowded with high-riding giants, the sedan sharpens its lines and prepares to reclaim its stretch of asphalt.
Summary
Despite SUV dominance, the sedan segment is poised for renewed activity with several updates and launches. Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Honda City will receive facelifts, while Mercedes-Benz will introduce the all-electric CLA in India. Changes will include refreshed styling, upgraded interiors, added features and minor transmission updates, signalling a competitive revival.
