On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the state government plans to distribute electric scooters to female college students. The announcement was made during a Women’s Day event in Hyderabad.

The initiative is aimed at improving mobility for young women and making daily travel to college easier and safer. The scheme was also one of the key election promises made by the Congress party during the Telangana Assembly elections.

Scheme May Not Start Immediately

Although the announcement has generated excitement, the government indicated that the scheme may not be implemented in the current financial year due to financial constraints.

However, officials confirmed that the plan is under active consideration and could be introduced in the near future. The government is expected to work out the budget, eligibility criteria, and implementation framework before launching the scheme.

Focus on Women’s Mobility and Education

The proposed e-scooter distribution programme aims to support female students’ independence and access to education. Many college students rely on public transport or long commutes, which can often be inconvenient or time-consuming.

By providing electric scooters, the government hopes to make commuting easier and encourage more young women to pursue higher education without mobility barriers.

Part of a Larger Clean Mobility Plan

The e-scooter initiative is also linked to Telangana’s broader efforts to promote electric vehicles and reduce pollution in Hyderabad.

The state government has introduced several measures to encourage electric mobility, including tax exemptions for EV purchases. Plans are also underway to gradually replace diesel buses with electric buses and convert thousands of auto-rickshaws to electric vehicles.

These steps are part of a long-term vision to transform Hyderabad into a cleaner and more sustainable city.

Vision for a Modern Hyderabad

Alongside the mobility initiatives, the chief minister outlined a broader strategy to develop Hyderabad into a globally competitive city. The government is exploring measures such as reducing pollution, relocating heavily polluting industries outside city limits, and improving urban infrastructure.

Officials believe that combining women-focused welfare schemes with green transportation policies could strengthen Telangana’s social and economic development.

If implemented successfully, the e-scooter programme could become one of the state’s most impactful initiatives for women’s empowerment and sustainable urban mobility.
