Malappuram district in Kerala is under consideration for a crucial role in Tata Group’s Rs 91,000 crore semiconductor project. A subsidiary plant is planned for Ozhur, near Tanur, as part of this massive venture, which also includes a primary facility in Gujarat. This development could significantly boost the state’s industrial landscape, propelling it into the semiconductor manufacturing sector.
Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran revealed these plans during an interview, which was later reported by Matrubhumi.com. Alongside the plant in Kerala, Tata Group is also working on another facility in Assam.
Kerala Government in Talks for Semiconductor Plant
The Kerala government, led by Industries Minister P. Rajeev, is in discussions with Tata Group to finalize the setup of the semiconductor plant. If successful, the project could bring in major industrial growth and employment opportunities for the region. The plant’s focus on advanced semiconductor technologies aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in high-tech manufacturing.
Collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor
Tata Group has teamed up with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a Taiwan-based firm, to drive this large-scale project. The primary semiconductor facility will be established in Gujarat, but the proposed plant in Malappuram will play a key role in expanding production capabilities. This collaboration is expected to further India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Employment Opportunities and Future Prospects
The semiconductor plants, including the one proposed in Kerala, are projected to create around 100,000 jobs, particularly in fields driven by artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing technologies. This could provide a significant employment boost to Kerala’s economy.
However, local authorities in Ozhur have yet to receive any formal communication about the proposed plant. K Yoosaf, President of the Ozhur Panchayat Governing Body, confirmed that they are awaiting official notification but learned about the potential development through media reports.
With formal discussions in progress, this project promises to transform Kerala’s industrial future if it materializes.
