Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun revealed Taiwan’s intention to recruit migrant workers from northeast India, citing similarities in skin color, eating habits, religious beliefs, and labor skills.
Details of the Recruitment Strategy
In an interview, Hsu outlined plans following a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with India, emphasizing the need for substantive discussions on industry introduction, language requirements, and source regions.
Hsu clarified misconceptions about the scale of recruitment, highlighting the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in evaluating suitable regions in India. We had earlier reported that Taiwan will hire 100,000 Indians. This development has been termed as rumor by her.
Analysis and Future Prospects
While acknowledging challenges in diversifying labor sources, Hsu expressed optimism about the MOU’s potential to catalyze smoother labor cooperation.
However, concerns raised by TPP Chair Ko Wen-je regarding national security implications warrant attention, although Hsu emphasized the positive contributions of migrant workers to Taiwan’s economy.
