Spotify is taking social sharing a step further with the launch of Messages, its new in-app direct messaging (DM) feature. The update allows users to recommend songs, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the platform, aiming to make sharing and discovering content more seamless.

What’s New With Spotify Messages?
Until now, Spotify users could only share tracks via external platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, or Snapchat. With Messages, users 16 and older in select markets can send recommendations directly within Spotify. This move creates a dedicated space for music conversations, reducing dependence on outside apps.
Users will see suggested contacts based on past interactions—such as Jams, Blends, Collaborative Playlists, or family and duo plan members. Once a recipient accepts a request, both can exchange messages, react with emojis, and keep track of shared recommendations in one place.
Privacy & Safety Measures
Like other messaging apps, Spotify offers options to accept, reject, or block message requests. The company has emphasized safety, confirming that Terms of Use and Platform Rules apply to Messages. Spotify will deploy proactive detection technology to scan for harmful or illegal content, while moderators review flagged cases. Messages are also secured with industry-standard encryption, ensuring data safety both in transit and at rest.
Why It Matters
Spotify hopes Messages will boost platform engagement by keeping users connected within its ecosystem. Instead of simply streaming, users can now build mini-communities of shared music tastes. This could also give artists and creators more visibility through word-of-mouth recommendations.
However, the real test will be whether users adopt it. Many are already comfortable sharing through Instagram or WhatsApp. Spotify has clarified that Messages is not a replacement but a complementary feature to existing integrations.
How to Use Spotify Messages
To try it out:

- Access all conversations from your profile photo in the top left.
With Messages, Spotify is evolving beyond being just a streaming service—it’s now becoming a social hub for music lovers.
