After a prolonged wait, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink has finally received the green light from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) to launch its services in India. This regulatory approval positions Starlink as the third major satellite internet provider in the country after OneWeb and Reliance Jio.

High-Speed Satellite Internet for Remote Areas
Starlink aims to bridge the digital divide by offering high-speed broadband connectivity, especially in rural and underserved regions. The service is expected to play a key role in providing internet access to remote schools, health centres, and communities where traditional telecom infrastructure is limited or non-existent.
Hardware and Subscription Cost Details
Reports suggest that the Starlink kit (which includes a satellite dish and router) will be priced at approximately ₹33,000, while monthly subscription fees are expected to range between ₹3,000 and ₹4,200. These prices are in line with neighbouring markets like Bhutan and Bangladesh but could be slightly higher compared to less developed countries.
Partnerships with Airtel and Jio
Starlink has partnered with both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to facilitate distribution and reach. Airtel is expected to leverage its retail presence for enterprise connectivity, while Jio may use its extensive network to target rural users. These partnerships will help distribute Starlink hardware and possibly offer bundled internet services.
Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles
Starlink’s entry into the Indian market has faced numerous challenges, including disagreements over spectrum allocation methods. Reliance Jio advocated for auction-based allocation, while Musk favoured administrative allocation. The latter view eventually influenced policy changes, helping pave the way for Starlink’s approval.
What Comes Next?
While final approval has been granted, Starlink still needs to secure spectrum allocation, build ground infrastructure, and complete regulatory trials before full-scale launch. The company is expected to begin pilot rollouts soon, with an aim to transform digital connectivity in India.
