Cancer is one of the leading health concerns in India, affecting millions of people each year. To improve access to quality treatment, the government has announced a plan to establish daycare cancer centres in all district hospitals within the next three years. This initiative will make cancer care more accessible, particularly for those living in remote and rural areas.

Budget Allocation and Implementation

The government has allocated 3200 crore rupees for setting up these centres. The Ministry of Health is conducting a survey to assess the infrastructure of district hospitals and identify areas that need improvement. The project aims to reduce the pressure on large cancer hospitals by offering early-stage treatment and basic care at the district level.

Services Offered at Daycare Cancer Centres

These centres will focus on providing essential cancer care services, including:

  • Chemotherapy: Patients will receive chemotherapy sessions without needing long-term hospitalization.
  • Awareness Programs: Public campaigns will educate people about early detection and prevention.
  • Screening and Diagnosis: Regular screening for oral, breast, and cervical cancer will be available.
  • Patient Support: Medical staff will guide patients on treatment options and lifestyle modifications.

Reducing the Burden on Tertiary Hospitals

Currently, many cancer patients have to travel long distances to major cities for treatment. By bringing essential services to district hospitals, the new daycare centres will reduce travel expenses and waiting times. This approach will also allow specialized cancer hospitals to focus on complex cases that require advanced treatments.

Strengthening Cancer Treatment in India

The initiative is part of a larger effort to improve cancer care in India. Since 2014, over 3000 crore rupees have been invested in state cancer institutes and tertiary care centres. Additionally, affordable cancer medicines are being provided through government schemes like Ayushman Bharat.

Conclusion

The governments plan to set up daycare cancer centres is a major step toward making cancer care more accessible and affordable. With proper implementation, this initiative can save lives, reduce financial stress for patients, and ensure that early-stage cancer treatment is available to all.
