Pune RTO Declares 18 Taxi Aggregator Companies Illegal
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has deemed 18 taxi aggregator companies operating in the city, including Rapido and Redbus, as illegal. The RTO has urged the Transport Commissioner to take action by shutting down their websites and apps, citing the lack of appropriate licenses. This move follows demands from unions for regulatory compliance and fairness in the transportation sector.
Companies Operating Without Licenses
The list of declared illegal companies includes well-known names like MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, and RedBus, among others. According to Section 93(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, these companies must obtain permission before conducting business. However, none of them have applied for licenses, prompting the RTO to instruct the Special Inspector General of Cyber Cell to take action against their digital platforms.
Exclusion of Ola and Uber
Notably, Ola and Uber are not part of the list as they have already applied for licenses under the central aggregator policy. Their applications are pending, awaiting approval in the upcoming meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) chaired by the District Collector. This distinction underscores the ongoing regulatory efforts to ensure compliance and fair competition in the taxi aggregator sector in Pune.
