The Maharashtra school education department has released the official academic calendar for the 2025–26 session for government schools. The new timetable includes 129 non-working days and 237 teaching days, offering a clear structure for schools, teachers, and students to plan the year ahead.

School Reopening Dates Confirmed
According to the government circular:
- Schools across Maharashtra (except Vidarbha) will reopen on June 16, 2025.
- Schools in Vidarbha will begin their academic year on June 23, 2025, a week later than the rest of the state.
This decision was finalized following consultations with teachers’ associations and education experts.
Holiday Breakdown for 2025-26
Here’s a detailed classification of the 129 holidays in the upcoming academic year:
- Sundays: 53 days (non-working)
- Summer Vacation: 41 days
- Public Holidays: 21 days
- Diwali Holidays: 9 days
- Principal’s Discretion: 3 days
- District Collector’s Discretion: 2 days
This year sees an additional Sunday, which adds one more holiday compared to the 2024–25 academic session.
Clarifying the Academic Year Confusion
Earlier this year, there was confusion regarding a possible shift in the academic year from June–April to April–March to align with CBSE norms, as proposed by the State Curriculum Framework for School Education (SCF-SE). However, Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh clarified in February that the traditional June reopening would continue for 2025–26, maintaining consistency and avoiding disruption.
Final Word: Structure and Flexibility Combined
The finalized calendar ensures a balance between instructional time and rest periods. While 237 days are earmarked for teaching, the holidays provide ample recovery and planning time for both students and educators. The inclusion of discretionary holidays also allows room for local or school-specific adjustments.
For parents and teachers alike, this clarity helps in organizing family plans, school activities, and academic targets for the year ahead.
