Realme Privacy Issue Impact: Oppo, OnePlus Issues Clarification Over Controversial 'Intelligent Services' Feature

Oppo and OnePlus have come out with their own statements regarding a controversial feature called Enhanced Intelligent Services which comes preloaded in their smartphones.

Although users can turn this feature off with the help of a toggle, it is turned on by default for all.  

This comes after Realme was accused of collecting user data without users’ permission. 

Update fix

In response, it introduced a new software update which disables enhanced intelligent services on select models.

The Realme 11 Pro and the Realme 11 Pro+ started receiving a software patch that automatically disables the service without requiring any user intervention.

It had issued an official statement, saying it is “strictly in compliance with Android security mechanisms”.

It went on to say, “All data processed in this service is encrypted and stored in encrypted hardware within the user’s device strictly in compliance with Android security mechanisms. 

This data is completely stored within the device and is not shared anywhere else or uploaded on the cloud. 

We place great emphasis on user privacy protection, the enhanced intelligent services feature can be manually turned on or off basis the needs of the consumers. The company complies with the local laws and regulations.”

OnePlus 

OnePlus said that it does not collect any data on SMS, phone calls or schedules and the data processing feature is encrypted on the users’ hardware.

Hence the data is not shared anywhere else.

The company’s statement read, “We would like to clarify that the enhanced intelligent services feature helps optimise your device usage, so you can enjoy better battery life and temperature performance. 

We take your privacy seriously, so you can rest assured that your data is not shared anywhere else or uploaded to the cloud.”

Oppo 

Oppo stated the same, explaining that this feature aims to optimise the device for better battery life and temperature monitoring.

As per its official statement, “Oppo does not collect data on SMS, phone calls, or schedules. 

The data processed through Enhanced Intelligent Services is encrypted and stored in encrypted hardware within the device itself. 

This data is not shared anywhere else or uploaded to the cloud.”

How to turn it off

Users can manually turn the feature off on their phones.

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on ‘Additional Settings’
  • Select ‘System Services’
  • Uncheck ‘Enhanced System Services’
  • Restart the phone
