Rapido Bike Taxis Finally Hit Pune Roads
Pune commuters now have another option for getting through the city’s increasingly congested roads. Rapido bike taxi services have started becoming available in Pune, bringing app-based two-wheeler rides back to the city after years of regulatory uncertainty.
The rollout comes after Maharashtra introduced a formal regulatory framework for bike taxis and app-based aggregators, opening the door for services that had previously operated in a legally uncertain environment.

Why Bike Taxis Matter In Pune
For many Pune commuters, the attraction is simple: a motorcycle can often move through traffic considerably faster than a car or auto-rickshaw.
Bike taxis can also offer a cheaper option for short-distance journeys, particularly for commuters travelling to railway stations, metro stations, offices and other locations where last-mile connectivity is a challenge.
Rapido’s Pune platform now lists Bike Taxi alongside its auto and cab services, allowing users to select a two-wheeler ride directly through the app.
Pune Has Had A Complicated Bike Taxi History
Bike taxis are not entirely new to Pune.
App-based operators began experimenting with motorcycle-based passenger services in the city and other Indian metros several years ago. However, the legal status of using privately registered two-wheelers for commercial passenger transport became a major issue.
In January 2023, Maharashtra prohibited the use of private or non-transport two-wheelers for app-based passenger services. Rapido subsequently challenged the regulatory restrictions, while authorities maintained that aggregators required appropriate licences to operate.
The result was a stop-start journey for bike taxis, with commuters seeing services appear and disappear depending on regulatory action.
Maharashtra Finally Creates A Formal Framework
The situation changed with Maharashtra’s Bike-Taxi Rules, 2025 and the state’s newer aggregator framework.
The rules provide a formal licensing structure for bike taxis and allow Regional Transport Authorities to impose city-specific conditions, including limits on the number of bikes, pricing and designated pickup and drop-off points.
Drivers also have to meet prescribed eligibility and compliance requirements.
In July 2026, the Maharashtra government announced that permits for app-based bike taxi services would begin being issued from August 1.
Rapido And Uber Sought Pune Approval
The regulatory change was followed by applications from Rapido and Uber to the Pune RTO for permission to operate e-bike taxi services.
The RTO began checking whether the companies complied with safety requirements, vehicle conditions and the state’s aggregator policy.
The latest rollout indicates that Rapido has now moved beyond the application stage and is making bike taxi rides available to Pune customers.
But There Is A Big EV Twist
Pune’s new bike taxi era could quickly become an electric one.
Maharashtra has now directed bike taxi aggregators to transition to 100% electric fleets by July 2027. Operators have been given nine months to complete the transition, creating a relatively short window for petrol-powered bike taxis.
This means Pune could see the rapid expansion of bike taxis while simultaneously becoming an important testing ground for electric two-wheeler-based public mobility.
Safety And Driver Economics Remain Questions
The expansion also brings questions around passenger safety, driver earnings, insurance, vehicle standards and enforcement.
The state’s rules include requirements intended to regulate these areas, while fares must be disclosed to passengers before a ride begins.
For Pune commuters, however, the immediate question is much simpler: whether bike taxis can provide a reliable way to beat traffic without creating a new set of regulatory and safety problems.
After years of uncertainty, Rapido’s return could mark the beginning of a much more structured bike taxi market in Pune.
Summary
Rapido bike taxis have started becoming available in Pune after years of regulatory uncertainty surrounding two-wheeler passenger services. Maharashtra’s newer bike taxi and aggregator rules have created a formal framework for operations. Rapido and Uber had earlier approached the Pune RTO for approval. The latest rollout comes just as Maharashtra has ordered bike taxi operators to transition to 100% electric fleets by July 2027.
