Booking train tickets could soon become significantly faster and smoother for millions of passengers. Indian Railways is set to roll out a major upgrade to its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), boosting ticket booking capacity nearly fivefold and reducing the chances of website crashes during peak booking periods. The move is part of a broader digital transformation initiative aimed at modernising the country’s railway reservation infrastructure.

Ticket Booking Capacity to Jump Nearly Five Times

One of the biggest highlights of the upgrade is the massive increase in booking capacity. The new PRS will be capable of processing up to 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, compared to the current capacity of around 32,000 tickets per minute. This enhancement is expected to significantly improve the booking experience, especially during high-demand periods such as Tatkal reservations, festive seasons, and holiday rushes.

The increased capacity is expected to reduce server overloads, slow response times, and failed transactions that frequently frustrate passengers.

Replacing a 40-Year-Old Reservation System

Indian Railways is replacing its decades-old Passenger Reservation System with a modern cloud-based platform. The existing system has been serving passengers for nearly four decades and struggles to cope with the growing volume of online bookings.

The new infrastructure is designed to handle significantly higher traffic volumes while offering greater reliability, scalability, and faster processing speeds. Railway officials believe the upgrade will help create a more seamless and dependable ticket booking experience for passengers across the country.

AI to Improve Waitlist Predictions

The upgraded reservation platform will also integrate artificial intelligence-based tools to help passengers make better travel decisions. One of the key features will be AI-powered waitlist prediction, which is expected to provide up to 94% accuracy in forecasting ticket confirmation chances.

This feature could help travellers better assess whether their waitlisted tickets are likely to be confirmed, reducing uncertainty and improving travel planning.

New IRCTC Website Also on the Way

Alongside the PRS upgrade, Indian Railways is preparing to launch a revamped IRCTC website. The upgraded platform is expected to offer faster performance, improved user experience, enhanced booking features, and better handling of peak traffic loads.

The new website is scheduled to be launched by mid-July and forms part of the government’s efforts to modernise railway services through technology-driven solutions.
