Tech Industry Faces Layoffs as Indeed Report Shows Rapid Shift in Job Demand
Job seekers should be aware that while there is a decline in the overall demand for tech jobs, there are increasing opportunities in fields like cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Brendon Bernard, senior economist at Indeed, said, “Many positions are losing steam,” urging professionals to rethink their career paths.
The job market is changing dramatically due to trends in automation.
Automation is one of the main causes of the decline of traditional roles, but there isn’t just one.
As businesses adopt new technologies and security requirements, strategic roles like data scientists, cloud architects, cybersecurity analysts, and AI and machine learning engineers are becoming more and more important.
In order to stay competitive as the tech job market declines, job seekers must develop skills that meet modern demands.
While demand for AI and cloud expertise is increasing, Indeed reports a sharp drop in postings for traditional roles.
Which Roles Will Be Replaced?
Certain traditional roles are falling out of favour:
- Front-end web developers: increasingly replaced by low-code platforms and design templates.
- QA testers: manual testing is being phased out by automated tools.
- IT support specialists: cloud services and self-service systems are reducing the need for in-house support.
- Blockchain developers: prospects have fallen due to the crypto slump and stricter regulations.
Several forces are driving this shift:
- AI and automation, leading to leaner teams and smarter systems.
- Remote work, which reduces infrastructure needs for traditional IT.
- Economic caution, with hiring now focused on innovation and high-impact roles.
Bernard added, “While there isn’t a single cause linking AI to the plunge, automation trends are likely driving the weakness.”
Because of their strategic significance, some positions—such as data scientists, cloud architects, cybersecurity analysts, and AI/ML engineers—remain in great demand.
Jobs with the biggest declines include:
- Web developer: –72%
- .NET developer: –68%
- Java developer: –68%
- Front-end developer: –67%

- SAP lead: +356%
- AI/ML engineer: +334%
- Oracle HCM manager: +263%
- Data center technician: +144%
- SAP consultant: +98%
