The much-anticipated Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway is one step closer to becoming a reality, with the Maharashtra government preparing to send the final proposal for cabinet approval. Once completed, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Pune and Nashik from five hours to just three, while unlocking significant economic potential across three key districts.

Project Highlights and Scope
The expressway will span 133 kilometers, connecting Pune, Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar), and Nashik. The ₹28,429 crore project will be executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and is expected to be completed within three years of receiving cabinet clearance.
The project received design approval in February 2023 and will also connect to the Surat-Chennai Highway, creating a seamless corridor for logistics and freight movement across states.
Infrastructure and Land Acquisition
The expressway will feature:
- 12 major flyovers across rivers and streams
- Key interchanges at Chimbli, Chakan, and Pabal (Pune); Rajuri, Khandarmal, Sakur, Machi, and Kasare (Ahilyanagar and Nashik)
- It will pass through Khed, Shirur, Ambegaon, and Junnar in Pune district, and Sangamner in Ahilyanagar
- Approximately 1,545 hectares of land will be acquired for the project
Authorities are also considering integration with the Shirdi route, which could further boost religious tourism and related services.
Impact on Semi High-Speed Rail and Economy
The expressway’s fast progress may have implications for the delayed Pune-Nashik Semi High-Speed Rail Project. In June 2023, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar instructed officials to assess if land previously earmarked for the rail project could be repurposed for the expressway.
However, the expressway’s potential economic impact is substantial. It is expected to accelerate industrial development, enhance logistics efficiency, and boost employment across Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik. Sectors such as manufacturing, warehousing, agriculture, and transport stand to benefit the most.
Final Clearance Awaited
Chief Engineer Ashok Bhalekar of the Road Development Authority confirmed that the project is awaiting cabinet nod. Once approved, implementation will begin in full swing.
The Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway promises to be a transformative infrastructure project, poised to reshape Maharashtra’s regional economy.
