The Maharashtra state cabinet is expected to approve the long-awaited Pune-Mumbai Expressway expansion within two months. The project plans to widen the expressway from six lanes to eight lanes, addressing increasing traffic congestion and improving safety.

Pune Mumbai Expressway Will Be Expanded By Spending Rs 5000 Crore; Cabinet Approval Awaited

Key Details of the Expansion

  • Additional Lanes: One new lane will be added in each direction, expanding to eight lanes.
  • Land Acquisition: Around 100 hectares of land will be required.
  • New Tunnels: Eight tunnels will be constructed at locations such as Madap, Bhatan, and Kamshet.
  • Estimated Cost: The project will cost ₹5,000 crore, including land acquisition and construction.

Project Timeline

The expansion will be completed in two phases over three years, with ₹2,500 crore allocated for the first phase immediately after approval.

Need for Expansion

Inaugurated in 2002, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway now handles 60,000–70,000 vehicles daily, surging to 90,000 on weekends. With traffic growing at 5% annually, the expansion is critical to managing rising volumes and enhancing safety.

Government Support

The project, delayed earlier due to state elections, has gained momentum. Officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) are optimistic about swift cabinet approval, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis prioritizing the initiative.

Benefits of the Expansion

  • Improved Traffic Flow: Additional lanes will ease congestion and ensure smoother commutes.
  • Enhanced Safety: Wider roads and new tunnels will minimize bottlenecks and reduce accidents.
  • Economic Growth: Efficient transport will boost trade and regional connectivity.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway expansion is a vital step towards addressing the region’s growing transportation needs, fostering economic development, and ensuring safer commutes.
