Pune Metro is preparing for a major capacity expansion as Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) plans to introduce six-coach trains on its operational routes to accommodate rapidly growing passenger demand. The move comes ahead of the expected launch of the crucial Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, which is likely to significantly increase daily ridership across the city’s metro network.
Currently, Pune Metro operates three-coach trains on the PCMC–Swargate and Vanaz–Ramwadi corridors. However, with new metro lines, extensions, and increasing public adoption of mass transit, officials believe the existing train capacity may soon become insufficient.
Ridership Could Rise By 50%
According to Maha-Metro officials, passenger numbers are expected to increase sharply once the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor becomes operational. The line will connect Pune’s central areas with the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, one of India’s largest IT hubs.
Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar stated that Pune Metro is preparing for a future capacity requirement of nearly six lakh passengers per day. Current ridership has already crossed two lakh daily commuters on several occasions, and officials expect demand to rise substantially in the coming years.
The introduction of six-coach trains could significantly increase passenger carrying capacity while reducing overcrowding during peak office hours.
Infrastructure Already Designed For Expansion
One advantage for Pune Metro is that stations and platforms were originally designed with future expansion in mind. Officials have previously confirmed that existing infrastructure can accommodate six-coach trains without requiring major structural modifications.
This means the transition could primarily involve procuring additional coaches and upgrading operational systems rather than rebuilding stations.
Maha-Metro had earlier focused on increasing train frequency and procuring additional three-coach trainsets. However, the growing ridership outlook has now pushed authorities to explore longer train formations as a more sustainable long-term solution.
Metro Network Expansion Driving Demand
Pune’s metro network is undergoing rapid expansion. Along with Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, Phase II projects and extensions toward Nigdi, Katraj, Chandni Chowk, Khadakwasla, and other growing urban zones are also progressing.
The city is simultaneously investing in feeder bus services, multimodal integration, and last-mile connectivity solutions to encourage more commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
Urban mobility experts believe that increasing train capacity will become essential as Pune continues to grow into one of India’s largest technology and education hubs.
