The Maharashtra state government, in collaboration with the Central government, has approved the construction of third and fourth railway tracks on the Pune–Lonavala section. The project, a long-standing demand from commuters and stakeholders, was finalized during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol confirmed that years of continuous follow-up have finally resulted in the much-awaited clearance.

Why the Expansion Was Needed
The Pune–Mumbai corridor is among India’s busiest railway routes, serving both heavy passenger and goods traffic. Within this stretch, the Pune–Lonavala section plays a critical role, witnessing 41 suburban train services daily, in addition to several express and mail trains. Close to 2 lakh passengers use this section every day, resulting in severe congestion, delays, and overcrowding during peak hours.
Benefits of the New Tracks
The construction of third and fourth lines will directly address the demand-supply gap by:
- Increasing train frequency for daily commuters.
- Reducing congestion for both suburban and long-distance trains.
- Improving punctuality and reducing delays.
- Facilitating goods movement, ensuring smoother logistics between Pune and Mumbai.
- Enhancing overall connectivity, especially as Pune emerges as a major IT and industrial hub.
Officials stated that the cost will be shared between the State and Central governments, ensuring quicker execution and accountability.
Commuter and Stakeholder Response
The approval has been welcomed by commuters, railway unions, and local representatives who have consistently raised the issue. Many believe that the project will be a game-changer for Pune’s suburban railway system and could lay the foundation for further integration with metro services and high-speed rail in the future.
