Nowadays, traffic congestion has become a growing concern for daily commuters and office-goers in Pune’s central areas.
Pune Plans Construction Of An Underground Road Network
Considering the situation, a proposal to develop an underground road network in the city has been tabled in order to address this issue.
But now, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the administration to move forward with this plan.

In this regard, they have held a high-level meeting that was recently held in Pune in the presence of CM Fadnavis to discuss infrastructural measures for the city’s overall development.
This meeting was attended by the Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam, and local MLA Hemant Rasane, among others.
CM Fadnavis directed officials to focus on underground road projects in Pune’s central areas to reduce long-term traffic congestion during the discussions.
Following this directive, the projects such as the proposed underground road from Shaniwarwada to Swargate and Sarasbaug to Shaniwarwada are expected to gain momentum.
Considering Short-term and Long-term Measures To Improve Traffic Management
It appears that the Pune Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram has also extended his support to the underground road initiative.
He has already conducted a review of the traffic situation in Kasba Peth constituency along with MLA Hemant Rasane and DCP Rishikesh Raut on Thursday.
Considering all these latest initiatives, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) appears to be working on both short-term and long-term measures to improve the city’s traffic management presently.
This underground road network could transform Pune’s urban mobility and provide major relief to citizens struggling with traffic bottlenecks in key city areas after its implementation.
They have conducted a high-level review convened in Pune recently including senior state officials and urban development experts which was focused on long-term traffic solutions for the city.
In its derivative, the Maharashtra administration has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to prioritise underground road projects in central locations where traffic congestion impacts daily commuters, office-goers, and commercial transport.
A senior PMC traffic official said, “by diverting traffic underground, Pune can reduce congestion, lower emissions, and ensure safer, faster commutes.”
In coordination with local law enforcement, they can ensure that project planning integrates real-time traffic management with future infrastructure upgrades.
The broader benefits of subterranean corridors is also suggested by the Urban mobility experts.
This would not only help with easing daily traffic but these projects can facilitate emergency services, public transport efficiency, and equitable access for all commuters, including pedestrians and cyclists.
