The Maharashtra government is pushing ahead with plans to introduce pod taxis in Mumbai, with a particular focus on the busy Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently chaired a review meeting, highlighting how the service could ease congestion and provide seamless last-mile connectivity for office-goers and commuters.

Pod Taxis For Bandra Kurla Complex? Maharashtra CM Reviewing Pod Taxi Proposal

Project Scope and Plans

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has drafted a plan for a 13.5 km corridor with 54 stations by 2041. In the first phase, 8.8 km with 38 stations will be operational by 2027, linking Bandra, Kurla, and Sion railway stations with Metro networks and office complexes in BKC. Fares were initially estimated at ₹21 per km.

Government’s Vision

Fadnavis stressed that pod taxis must be world-class, integrated with Mumbai’s single mobility card, and use available infrastructure like skywalks creatively. He added that upcoming projects such as the bullet train and the new High Court complex would increase demand in BKC, making advanced solutions like pod taxis essential for smooth travel.

Experts Question Feasibility

Despite the government’s enthusiasm, transport experts remain unconvinced. Veteran transport expert A.V. Shenoy argued that pod taxis could become a “white elephant,” too expensive and impractical for Mumbai’s diverse commuter base. He noted that unlike trains, Metro, or pod taxis limited to fixed routes, BEST buses can reach every corner of the city.

BEST as a Practical Alternative

Experts suggest scaling up BEST services with larger fleets, ring services, and dedicated bus lanes as a more cost-effective way to achieve last-mile connectivity. Shenoy emphasised that buses remain the most affordable option for citizens and warned that pod taxis would not cater to all sections of society.

The Road Ahead

The government appears committed to pursuing pod taxis, but balancing futuristic infrastructure with affordability will be crucial. As Mumbai’s population grows and transport needs expand, the debate between high-tech solutions and practical public transport like BEST is likely to continue.
